Introduction

Dr. Channamalla Mahaswamiji is a distinguished scholar, philanthropist, spiritual leader, and eminent Veerashaiva saint whose contributions to religion, education, literature, and social welfare have earned him widespread respect and recognition. He was awarded the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Kannada Literature from Karnatak University, Dharwad, for his acclaimed research thesis, Shoonya Sampadane: Abhyasa Parampare.” His scholarly engagement with the philosophical traditions of the Veerashaiva movement reflects his profound understanding of spiritual practice and literary heritage.

Among his notable literary contributions is Nirbayala Neyige, a philosophical work that explores the concept of attaining enlightenment within one’s lifetime. Dr. Chennamalla Mahaswamiji interprets this spiritual realization as Paripoorna Dedege—a journey towards absolute truth and completeness. His intellectual growth was nurtured through constant interaction with scholars, saints, and cultural luminaries who frequently participated in the programmes organized by his father, Pt. Rajguru Guruswami Kalikeri, a renowned writer and classical vocalist of exceptional repute.

Dr. Channamalla Mahaswamiji was chosen as the 28th Pontiff of the historic Suvarnagiri Samsthana Virakta Matha, an ancient religious institution associated with the spiritual legacy of the 12th-century social and religious renaissance led by Allama Prabhu and other Sharanas of the Kalyana movement. The Matha, situated in Kanakagiri, possesses a rich historical heritage and has served as an important centre of spiritual and social transformation for centuries.

On 11 May 2005, he was formally installed as the head of this venerable institution. Despite assuming this immense responsibility at a young age, his unwavering commitment to learning and self-improvement remained undiminished. He pursued a Master’s degree and Postgraduate Diplomas in Translation Studies, Ancient Scripts, and Kanaka Studies at Karnatak University, Dharwad. In 2009, under the guidance of Prof. Dr. B. V. Yakkundi, he successfully completed his doctoral studies.

Through perseverance, vision, and dedicated service, Dr. Mahaswamiji transformed the institution into a dynamic centre of education, spirituality, and social engagement. Under his leadership, numerous educational institutions affiliated with the Matha witnessed remarkable growth and development, contributing significantly to the educational advancement of the region.

Early Life and Spiritual Formation

Born as Kalimarulasiddayya, the fourth son of  Dr. Pt. Rajguru Guruswami Kalikeri and Smt. Sharada Kalikeri, he was raised in a family deeply rooted in religious values, literary pursuits, and cultural traditions. His father’s scholarship and literary accomplishments profoundly influenced his formative years. Affectionately nurtured by his family, he developed a strong inclination towards philanthropy and spirituality during his pre-university education.

Although his desire to pursue a spiritual path initially encountered resistance from family members, his determination remained steadfast. Guided by the blessings of His Holiness Gaanayogi Pt. Puttaraja Gavai, he received Sanyasa Deeksha from His Holiness Jagadguru Dr. Annadana Mahaswamiji Mudaragi at the revered Shivayoga Mandira. Following his initiation into monastic life, he came to be known as “Kalidevaru.”

Under the guidance of his spiritual preceptors, he underwent rigorous training in Sanyasa traditions, Yoga, Yogic meditation, Lingarchana, and other aspects of Veerashaiva philosophy and practice. He continued his formal education at Jagadguru Sri Shivaratri Deshikendra Educational Institutions in Mysuru, where he completed his undergraduate studies and earned the admiration of Jagadguru Sri Shivaratri Deshikendra Mahaswamiji.

His passion for Kannada literature subsequently led him to Karnatak University, Dharwad. During this period, he was selected as the 28th Pontiff of the Suvarnagiri Samsthana Virakta Matha, and “Kalidevaru” assumed the spiritual identity of Dr. Channamalla Mahaswamiji.

Harmony and Inclusive Social Vision

A defining principle of Dr. Channamalla Mahaswamiji’s leadership is his unwavering commitment to social harmony and inclusiveness. Guided by the conviction that “the Matha belongs to all,” he has consistently welcomed people from all castes, communities, faiths, and social backgrounds. Recognizing the transformative potential of youth, he established Yuva Sharana–Sharaneyara Sangha, an organization dedicated to inspiring young minds towards social responsibility and community service. The various educational, cultural, and social programmes organized under his leadership bear testimony to his sincere concern for societal welfare.

The Matha has become a vibrant platform for intellectual and cultural exchange, regularly hosting scholars, musicians, spiritual leaders, and social reformers. Through these initiatives, Dr. Mahaswamiji promotes values of harmony, peace, and social cohesion.

Inspired by the ideals of the 12th-century Anubhava Mantapa, he has endeavoured to recreate a contemporary forum for dialogue and scholarship by bringing together thinkers and researchers at Kanakagiri. His efforts have significantly contributed to the revitalization of intellectual discourse and the dissemination of educational opportunities in the region. Through persistent engagement with governmental and educational agencies, he has also secured support for the expansion and strengthening of educational institutions under the Matha.

Despite his demanding responsibilities as a spiritual leader and social reformer, Dr. Channamalla Mahaswamiji has cultivated a distinguished literary career. Through sustained engagement with writers, scholars, and literary enthusiasts, he has contributed meaningfully to contemporary Kannada literature. His encouragement of emerging writers and researchers has fostered a vibrant literary culture within and beyond the Matha.

Writing under the pen names “Chennasri” and “Suvarnagirisha,” he has authored several significant works that have received appreciation from eminent scholars and literary critics.

  • Nirbayala Neyige – A profound exploration of the lives, philosophies, and literary contributions of the 12th-century Sharanas and spiritual leaders. The work is widely regarded as an important contribution to contemporary Kannada literature.
  • 100 Namanagalu – A lyrical tribute commemorating one hundred years of Basava Jayanti celebrations.
  • Suvarnagiri: Adhunika Vachana – A collection reflecting modern interpretations of Vachana literature.
  • Suvarna Sinchana – A compilation of essays and reflective writings.
  • Dharmaprabhe – Editorial writings and contributions on religious and social themes.
  • Pt. Rajguru Guruswami Kalikeri Samagra Sahitya – A monumental editorial project comprising ten volumes and nearly 5,000 pages, preserving the literary legacy of his father.
